There are four models of steering stop:
- modell 82,1-7 that is built in the head cups
- modell 82,6-7 for FXR and FXD SuperGlide
- modell 82,5-7 for XL Sportster
- modell 82,4-7 for FXST Softail, DuoGlide and older rigid frames
For year model 1936-1991: (modell 82,1-7):
When you have loose head cups. Install the head cups in the frame. It is extremely important that they are pressed all the way into the steering head, there must not be any paint left between head cups and the steering head. There is a separate instruction for steering stop that is built in the head cups.
Install the steering stop with 4 pins in the triple tree. Lubricate the bearings with grease. Install bearings and lower triple tree into the frame and tighten the bearing nut, then you loosen the nut 20 degrees. Be very careful about not tightening the bearings down too much or too little. The lower tree must not swing sluggishly or loosely. If you are uncertain, ask the advise of someone who is experienced in assembling bearings.
Install the fork tubes in the lower triple tree and tighten them down hard so you will be able to tighten the fork tube plugs. They must be tightened down really good and hard, or the stability and function of the fork will be seriously affected.
For older fork, before 1977:
Use thread sealer tape. Do not use o-rings.
For forks 1978 and newer:
Use standard o-rings on the fork plug.
Loosen the fork tubes again and fit them into the top triple tree. Tighten the tree top nut carefully to lock the bearing adjustment nut.
Only for TOLLE adjustable triple tree: Now follow the separate instructions for adjusting your bike’s trail right, and tighten all bolts and nuts.
Good Luck!
